Darby with his new partner.

Meet Darby!

Helping veterans is a major part of our chapter’s service. In 2021-2022, we raised $25,000 for the training of a service dog for a veteran with a need, usually post-traumatic-stress (PTS). Following a two-year training program, Darby was placed with his new “partner” on March 23, 2024. Thanks to Leashes of Valor for all the work they do training these dogs for our veterans.

Serving Our Veterans and Welcoming New Citizens

Programs for our veterans and the welcoming of our new citizens are the bedrock of the Albemarle Chapter, NSDAR, patriotic service projects. We provide toiletries and lap robes to the veterans at McGuire Clinic in Richmond, Virginia, and provide a welcome reception at all naturalization ceremonies at the Federal Courthouse in Charlottesville. On July 4th each year, the Albemarle Chapter, NSDAR, assists in the naturalization ceremonies at Monticello, where people who have been citizens of other countries take the Oath of Allegiance to complete the process of becoming a U.S. citizen. Each new citizen is provided with a United States desktop flag on a stand and a flag code booklet.

One of our chapter’s major veteran projects was in 2015 when we provided four wounded veterans each with a mobile TrackChair, a combination between a wheelchair and a small tank. The customizable action TrackChair allows the disabled to maneuver a beach, walk in the woods, hunt, and fish, attend a sporting event, and even play golf.
